Dive computers are focused on the same problem faced by decompression tables, but are able to continuously calculate the partial pressure of the inert gases in the body based on the depth and on the diver's dive profile. Since the dive computer automatically measure these data, it reduces the need to carry a diver watch and a depth gauge, and especially can alert the diver of excess speed in ascent and possible stages of decompression missed.
Many dive computers also provide other information to the diver, such as for example the water temperature, the gas pressure inside the cylinder or the average consumption of air.
Dive computers are nothing more than modern computer battery enclosed in a waterproof case. They continuously monitor the dive profile should value the time and pressure. All dive computers measure the pressure surrounding to calculate the partial pressure of the gases within human tissue. The more advanced models (or more current) also include additional information such as water temperature or the pressure inside the cylinder.

Some algorithms used are the Buhlmann algorithm, the multi-tissue model (in English Multi-Tissue Model), the model variable permeability, and often the Reduced Gradient Bubble Model (RGBM or).
